The Story
Well, basically, Kaikan Phrase is about the band called Λucifer, but the incarnations of the series as a manga and an anime are very different.

The Manga
Sakuya is the leader of the band called 'Λucifer' He has interesting fashion sense, is rich, and decides within a nanosecond of meeting a girl that he obsessively likes her, and will protect her. He seems to enjoy intimidating her and making shocking sexual advances on the her in public. He always manages to get there in time to rescue the her from whatever danger she is in. The girl in question is named Aine. She, like most Mayu Shinjo leading girl characters is fairly timid, Sakuya seems to startle her very easily. Aine is very cute, but is not liked at school, and is often beaten up and/or nearly sexually assaulted at school and has to be saved by Sakuya. Really, I wish she would smack Sakuya when he makes his advances on her sometimes. But actually, despite his aggressiveness, Sakuya does seem to be a nice guy who worries about Aine ^^;;; I probably make him sound menacing or something, but he really isn't like that. He is just very expressive about what he wants. ^_^ Sakuya first meets Aine when she dashes out into the street after a flying paper containing some rather hentai song lyrics she wrote for a contest an idol was having. Sakuya almost runs her down in his sports car. It was love (?) at first sight ^^ Because Aine's song lyrics are good (and really suggestive and apparently perfect for Sakuya's band 'Λucifer') Aine gets recruited to be the new songwriter for the group. It's her hentai song lyrics that first capture Sakuya's attention, and it's her song that gets Λucifer noticed by the music studios :) Lots of intense scenes between Aine and Sakuya :) Lots of bishounen guys, and song lyrics that I *really* want to decipher! ^_^ So the manga focuses on the relationship between Sakuya and Aine as various forces try to come between them. Be it evil music producers, jealous old flames, new bishounen on the scene, Sakuya and Aine fight to stay together. There are some side stories about the other band members, but the spotlight is on the main couple. The manga is very smutty, but in a cheesy, silly sort of way. Like I said, it's a guilty pleasure, like romance novels :D

The Anime
The anime follows the members of the band Λucifer, from their very beginnings, when they leave their old bands, first meet each other, officially form Λucifer, to their eventual fame. It details the conflicts between the band members on the rocky road to fame as they try to make their 5 very different personalities into one unit as Λucifer. Many of the early episodes are about the band members trying to get Sakuya to join the group, and then after that it is the ban's struggles to get their name out as a band, become an indie group, and try to get a contract. They play everywhere from empty alleys, to music live houses, to warehouses, etc. This is much more of a story about the band as a whole. There is some focus on Sakuya, but the other members get major storylines too. Their characters are fleshed out so much more in the anime. Aine-chan isn't even in the anime until episode 22! Quite a change from the manga!

Anime:
He is the moodiest band member. He joins the group after he is 'discovered' singing and playing the piano in a hotel lounge by Atsuro. The moment the band members hear his voice, they KNOW he is the only person who can be their vocalist. they spend several episodes courting Sakuya, and trying to convince him to join the band. He does so mainly to relieve the boredom and to return some meaning into his life. In the beginning he lives alone, and is very mysterious. None of the other band members can really get close to him, though I think Santa tries to the most. Sakuya is a loner and likes to do things his way. I like to think of his anime persona as a 'moody dork' because he is very stubborn, and always sulks.

Manga:
Sakuya is the driving force of Λucifer. He has an incredible presence, and all the girls love him. He is passionate about the band, and works hard to make it a success. The moment he sees Aine-chan, he exhibits his very domineering personality. He knows what he wants, and goes after it. He knew right away that he wanted Aine-chan, and she was no match for his strong personality. He can be moody, and is very possessive of Aine-chan. He will not have her seeing other guys. When she IS around other guys, he can get very jealous. He loves her very much and always worries about her, and wants to be sure she is safe. Sakuya wants Aine to be with him always. Despite the obvious affection he feels for Aine, I think he can be pretty intimidating. Sakuya has naturally blue eyes that startle people when they first meet him. Most people think they are blue contact lenses. Sakuya is actually half white. One evening his mother, who was married to a handsome Japanese man, was raped by a foreigner named Rupert. She soon found herself pregnant, and, not knowing if the child was her husband's or the product of the rape, she decided to keep the child. When Sakuya was born, they thought perhaps he was her husband's child, but then Sakuya's eyes turned blue, and the truth was discovered. The truth ended up causing his parents to get divorced. Sakuya is the half-brother of Ralph, the man in charge of Metro Records.

Anime:
In the Anime, Towa is the member of a popular visual rock band. All the members of the group are very handsome, and dress flashy. However, despite the group's success and popularity, Towa was feeling unsatisfied. The members of his group were good musicians, but they were more interested in making money and getting girls than in playing good music. This is why, right before the group was about to get signed by a major label, Towa left the group. He had been approached by Yuki about joining Λucifer, and decided to follow that path. He is a pretty level-headed guy, and other band members come to him for advice when they need help. Even though he left the visual rock band, Towa still dresses like a girl, and keeps his long blond hair. He has his own apartment, and allows both Atsuro and Yuki to stay there when they need crash space. His personality is quiet, and he doesn't seem to complain much.

Manga:
Kazuto was a classmate of Atsuro's. All through school, Kazuto was mistaken for a girl because of his good looks. He always had people confessing their love to him (both male and female!). However the one Kazuto loves is his childhood friend named Miya. They knew each other for as long as he could remember, yet they had always been just friends. After Kazuto got older, and was getting all this attention because of his looks, he still could not bring himself to confess to Miya how he felt. Then Kazuto and Atsuro get their chance to play in a band. Miya does Kazuto's makeup for him, and everyone is stunned at how beautiful he looks. After their first show, they meet Yukifumi, the member of the popular band called "Crime". Yuki is interested in Kazuto and Atsuro, and wants them to join a new band he is forming called "Λucifer". This is great news! Even better is later that evening when Kazuto and Miya finally confess their love for each other! She had always cared for him just like he loved her! To this day, Miya does Kazuto's makeup, even after he changes his name to Towa and joins the soon-to-be-famous group Λucifer!

Anime:
Santa is a fun guy! He is what I like to call the 'baka boy' of Λucifer. He has a short fuse, and can get riled up and enthusiastic about things. Not really in a violent way, but in an emotional or over-excited way. Santa and Yuki are the ones who first decided to form Λucifer. Santa was in a different band before, but after discovering his girlfriend (the vocalist of that group) in the arms of another guy, he left that band and joined Λucifer. Santa can get jealous and competitive, but not in such a threatening way as Sakuya can get. And as worked up as Santa gets emotionally, he can also just as quickly crash down and be sorry for how he has behaved. HE can show reason, you just have to knock it into him sometimes. ^_-

Manga:
It is hard to describe Santa's manga personality, because frankly, the backup members of Λucifer don't get very much story time.

Anime:
Atsuro is the youngest member of Λucifer. When the band first forms, he is still in high school, and is facing pressure from his parents to study for his college entrance exams. His parents do NOT agree with his decision to join a rock band, and for a time, Atsuro was kicked out and forced to live with Towa. The struggle to get his parents to respect his dream of being a rock star and to recognize his talent as a musician

Manga:
In the manga, they list Atsuro as 19, and Sakuya as 17, so he isn't the youngest any more. Atsuro went to school with Towa, and they were good friends. They joined the same band together, and were recruited by Yuki to join Λucifer at the same time. Atsuro has a secret girlfriend that he doesn't tell anyone about until later in the series. Highlight the following text for spoilers as to who his girlfriend is. [Atsuro is in love with his older sister Yuka-chan! How shocking! However they are not actually related by blood. But they did grow up together, so when they started their relationship, it was a bit strange at first, so they decided to keep it hidden. It is still freaky though, how he still calls her 'ne-chan!' O_o Aine is the first to find out Atsuro and Yuka's secret. She tries to keep quiet about it, but Sakuya doesn't like her keeping secrets, and they end up telling him. Atsuro ends up telling the rest of Λucifer.]

Anime:
Yuki is one of the founders of Λucifer, and is the one who decided on the band's name. He knows good musical talent when he hears it, and was a major part of recruiting members into the band. He is usually calm and collected, but he cares a great deal about the group. He's also very suave. (I think he looks like Hotohori with purple hair ^_^) Yuki was the heir to a family of Noh performers, an ancient, traditional, Japanese theater style. Yuki's father put great pressure on him to continue the family art, even though his heart longed to devote all time to Λucifer. His family obligations are great, yet Yuki manages to live under the strain.

Manga:
Yuki is the only member of Λucifer who is married! His wife is named Maria, and he has a little son name Yukihiko. How adorable!
